General Ship Repair opens dry dock in Baltimore
Jan 18, 2008 12:00 AM General Ship Repair Corp., a ship and tugboat repair yard founded in 1924, has opened a new state-of-the-art dry dock to serve the needs of the Port of Baltimore and the mid-Atlantic region. “The project took about a year to build, said corporate vice president Cary Lynch. The dry dock was built right here on Key Highway using 100 percent local labor.”
The innovative design of General Ship Repair’s new dry dock allows for three distinct configurations. Dry dock No. 1 can haul large tugs up to 1,050 tons while dry dock No. 2 hauls small tugs up to 450 tons. Both dry docks work in unison to haul barges up to 1,500 tons. The new configuration allows for the dry docking of two vessels independently or one, larger vessel using both dry docks.
General Ship Repair is the only full service shipyard between New York and Norfolk that offers dry dock and wet berth services. General Ship Repair is capable of performing all types of repairs, conversion and construction on vessels. The shipyard diversified its topside ship repair business in 1969 by leasing a Navy Dry dock. In 1986, the dry dock was expanded to 900 tons lifting capacity, and in 2002, to 1125 tons lifting capacity. The new combination dry dock, which allows for larger vessels from out of state, already has dockings booked for 2008, including three dinner cruise ships, one barge, one tugboat, and a fireboat.
